The Little Rock Municipal Airport Commission today reviewed conceptual schematic designs for a proposed arrivals hall and terminal commons, marking another milestone in Clinton National Airport’s long-range effort to modernize the passenger experience and prepare for future growth.
The conceptual designs, presented by Minneapolis-based architecture firm Alliiance, are intended to guide discussion as the airport commission evaluates the future of the airport’s 54-year-old terminal.
The proposed concepts would modernize the terminal while providing flexibility to accommodate future passenger growth and evolving traveler expectations.
Concepts under consideration include:
- A new baggage claim and a larger, more efficient TSA security checkpoint
- Additional gates
- Additional space for restaurants, retail and other passenger amenities, including an outdoor terrace beyond the security checkpoint
- Improved circulation throughout the terminal to create a more welcoming and efficient passenger experience
“We’re taking a proactive approach to planning for the future. By engaging the public now, we can make informed decisions that improve the passenger experience and support economic growth,” said Suzanne Peyton, executive director of Clinton National Airport. “The airport commission is committed to making thoughtful investments that support our region while contributing to a strong statewide aviation system.”
The planning effort builds upon extensive public outreach conducted through the AirportNEXT community survey, which gathered feedback from passengers, residents, businesses and community stakeholders. Airport leadership is using that feedback to help shape a long-term vision centered on the passenger experience and the airport’s role in serving Arkansas for the next 30 years.
Commissioners also approved a contract with Unison Consulting, a Chicago-based financial consulting firm, to provide strategic financial analysis that will help evaluate long-term development options for the terminal project.
Construction of the airport’s new central utility plant is already underway. The facility will provide the infrastructure necessary to power the future terminal expansion. Terminal improvements are anticipated to begin after the utility plant is completed in 2028.
The airport will continue seeking public input during a drop-in community meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 901 Calhoun St., Little Rock. Residents will have an opportunity to review the conceptual plans, speak with project representatives and provide feedback to help guide the planning process.
